Not directly weather-related but added live video feeds provided by NASA.  Both are available from the Almanac > Astronomy & Space menu on the left.

  • NASA TV live feed – This is NASA’s television channel providing coverage of what the space agency is doing.
  • ISS live feed – Live video from the International Space Station.  Live video of specific tasks being performed by the astronauts is shown or oftentimes live video from the station’s exterior cameras.

9/14/13

  • The map on our Northeastern Colorado River Heights and Flood Status page was not working due to changes in the feed from the Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service.  The page has now been updated and incorporates an interactive map.  It also displays river heights and flood status for locations across northeastern Colorado.  You can find the page in the Almanac menu at the left.

9/11/13

  • We noticed our Record Weather Event page that is fed from data from the National Weather Service was not working properly.  This was due to some changes by the NWS.  We have fixed this now and you can always check to see what recent record-breaking weather we have experienced by selecting the Denver / Boulder office from the drop down on the page.  The page itself is under the Almanac / National Weather Service menu on the left.

9/1/13

  • Some much-needed behind the scenes work.  The computer that powers all of our weather equipment – the station software, radar, lightning detector, website, etc – was on its last leg.  It served us well for 5 years and it was time to go.  This weekend we replaced the computer with a brand new one with far more computing power.  The upgrade will allow us to continue to bring you the best local weather information and news in Thornton.

8/12/13

  • Due to changes in the way the U.S. Geological Survey formats its data, we updated our earthquake pages.  The new pages now use a Google map to display recent temblors.  We also have two earthquake pages now: One for quakes within a 500 mile radius of Denver, and one for all earthquakes globally.  You can find the pages in the Almanac menu on the left.

7/14/13

  • Changes to our Live Weather Gauges page. Gauges are a bit bigger and easier to read, we added a wind rose, the scrolling text display now shows the forecast and at the bottom you can select different units of measure.

6/27/13

  • We changed our west facing webcam orientation pointing it a bit more vertical.  This will allow a better view of the skies above while still maintaining perspective of nearby trees.

9/2/12

  • We’ve updated our monthly tables for Denver’s “Normals, Means & Extremes” and “”Top 10″ Precipitation & Temp”.  You can find them under the Almanac menu on the left then go to Climatology & Records.  You can also click here.
  • Some time ago we added a WeatherNation TV page that allows you to view broadcasts from the network live on our site.  Now we have added a National & International Video News page with the latest from NDN’s providers including CBS, AP and many more.  It is available under Area Information to the left and then select Video News.

7/3/12

  • The National Weather Service changed their forecast pages and that necessitated changes of our page as well.  While the basics are the same, we took the opportunity to do a bit of an upgrade.  The page will automatically display the forecast for Thornton as always but now there is a dropdown menu that allows you to easily grab the forecast from more than a dozen other cities across Colorado.  Click here to check it out or select ‘NWS 5 day forecast’ from the Forecasts menu on the left.

6/13/12

  • We already have a number of ways to view current weather conditions locally and from across the globe – see the Live Conditions menu at the left.  One new page we added expands on that and provides conditions from Denver area METAR stations.  METARs are permanent weather stations, oftentimes located at airports, that report current conditions in a standardized format (click here for details).  Our METAR page reads data from locations like Denver International Airport, Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport, Buckley Air Force Base and a number of other locations and provides their reported weather conditions in an easy to view format.  You can access it from the Live Conditions menu on the left or by clicking here.

6/12/12

  • Our Lightning Detection Center pages are among our most popular during severe weather season.  We have just added a new page that uses StormVue NGX to display lightning activity.  Using Flash, the display gives you the ability to zoom in and out, set alarms, choose what type of strikes to display and much more.  You can check it out here or find it in the Lightning menu to the left.

6/10/12

For anyone that reads our news section or views or Facebook page, you are well aware of our fondness for satellite imagery.  The ‘eyes in the sky’ can provide an amazing view of weather and disasters.  We have added two new pages that allow you to view some of the most amazing imagery:

3/4/12

With severe weather season approaching and a major tornado outbreak having occurred in recent days, we did some related work on the site.  Both of the pages mentioned can be accessed from the Severe Weather menu item on the left.

  • Our Tornado Season Statistics page received a major revamping. Graphs for tornado counts to date as well as historical information for the United States was added.
  • From 1950 to 2010 Adams County saw 156 tornadoes, the fourth most of any county in the United States.  Weld County just to our north is the #1 county in the nation. You can now check out Colorado’s rather prolific tornado history with our new Interactive Colorado Tornado History Map page.   How close have twisters come to where you live?

3/3/12

  • Operating ThorntonWeather.com is a very expensive endeavor done only to provide a public service.  You can help support our site and its operation and maintenance by making a donation. Click here to learn why you should donate and how to do it or select Donate from the bottom of the menu to the left.
  • Another way to view Thornton’s current weather in real time.  Our new Live Weather Gauges are a great way to see exactly what is happening outside right now.  You can access the page from the Live Conditions menu on the left.
    • Note: The new page uses HTML5 and as such a current browser is required – old versions of Internet Explorer will not work.  For older browsers, our Weather Display Live page uses Flash and will work fine.

2/7/12

  • WeatherNation provides an alternative to that other weather channel.  Unlike their competitors, WeatherNation is weather 24/7 – Not movies, not dramas.  When you want weather, this is the place to watch it.   We have created a page with a live feed of WeatherNation TV.  You can access it in the Forecasts menu to the left.

12/2/11

  • With winter weather arriving regularly now, school and business closures become more frequent.  We have created a School & Business Closure page that will let you know if the kiddos have school today or not.  The page is available under the Winter Weather menu to the left.

10/22/11

  • Get ready to hit the slopes!  We have updated our Snow and Ski Report Page with reports from OnTheSnow.com.  This new interactive page allows you to view conditions not only in Colorado but across the United States and the globe.

10/10/11

Just in time for winter weather, we have enhanced some of our related pages and added some new ones.

  • First up is a completely revamped Winter Weather Briefing page, your one-stop shop when the weather turns wintry.  From the latest weather warnings to radar, webcams, and links to other related pages on ThorntonWeather.com, it has it all and is the go to source when the snow flies and the mercury drops.
  • Two new winter weather related pages have been added:
  • Lastly, if you look at the main menu to the left, you will notice a dedicated Winter Weather menu item.  Within are links to the most common related pages for the season.

5/22/11

  • With severe weather season upon us, we have created a new Severe Weather Briefing Page.  This page serves as a ‘one stop shop’ for everything related to severe weather in our area.  At a glance you can see current watches and warnings, radar, lightning activity and other related imagery.  Clicking on any will take you to the appropriate page dedicated to that data.  The page also contains links to all the relevant pages on ThorntonWeather.com related to severe weather.  You can click here to go to the page or you can find it in the Severe Weather menu to the left.  When severe weather strikes, this is the page to check out!
  • The Storm Prediction Center is the National Weather Service’s main division for issuing and disseminating severe weather information.  We have pulled together all of the images and data from the SPC into one location on our new SPC Main Page.  From severe weather outlooks to storm reports and fire weather outlooks, this page links to all of the relevant information.  You can click here to go to the page or you can find it in the Severe Weather menu to the left.

5/7/11

  • Courtesy of the Weather Underground, we have incorporated their ‘Wundermap’ in two places.
    • First is the Wundermap radar which provides an interactive way to view the radar.  You can pan and zoom the radar not only for Thornton but for the entire nation.  You can find the Interactive Radar in the Radar & Maps menu to the left.
    • Second is the Wundermap current conditions which displays current conditions from personal weather stations like ThorntonWeather.com for the Denver area but again, also for the entire nation.  You can find the Wundermap conditions in the Live Conditions menu to the left.

4/20/11

  • New National Weather Warning Map.  Much like the northeastern Colorado warning map we added recently, this map provides a clickable map but now for the entire nation.  By clicking on a location you can get current weather watches and warnings for anywhere in the country. You can click here to go to the page or you can find it in the Severe Weather menu to the left.

3/12/11

  • We have added a Weather Alert Archive page.  This new system will archive all of the weather advisories and warnings received in the Thornton area.  As the database grows, it will provide a handy reference for looking back to see what types of severe weather occurred on a given day.  You can access it from the link above or by going to Almanac on the menu to the left then Thornton Weather Data.

2/26/11

  • New Severe Weather Summary page with clickable watch and warning map.  This new page is a tremendous resource for not only viewing watches and warnings here in Thornton but also across Colorado and the nation.  You can click on the map to view pertinent information for any location.  Interested in the severe weather for another spot in the nation?  Select the National Weather Service office location from the drop down and you can view that too.  You can click here to go to the page or you can find it in the Severe Weather menu to the left.

2/20/11

  • Flooding in northeastern Colorado is a very real threat in the spring and summer having claimed many lives in our history and causing millions of dollars in damage.  We have created a new Northeastern Colorado River Heights and Flood Status page to allow you to check the status of major rivers in the region.  The latest levels as well as the flood status for the South Platte River, Cache La Poudre River, Big Thompson River, Clear Creek, Bear Creek, South Boulder Creek and St. Vrain Creek are all available.  You can access it from the link above or by going to the Almanac menu to the left and selecting ‘River Heights.’

2/12/11

  • We’ve created a new interactive graphs page that allows you to retrieve data from any day, month or year since ThorntonWeather.com went live.  You can mouse over a given time and it will display the detailed statistic for that time and you can even zoom in on a period of time.  The new Detailed Graphs page can be accessed from the Almanac menu to the left and then go to Thornton Weather Data.  You can click here to go straight to the page.
  • Modified the Weather Warnings / Watches page to display the northeastern Colorado warning map.  This provides a good overview of any active warnings in the region.
  • Modified the Rocky Mountain Weather Network page to display the list of stations to the right of the map.  This way you don’t have to scroll so far to view the conditons below that.

1/16/11

  • A totally new satellite imagery page.  There is now a much wider variety of satellite image types and regions.  The main page allows you to select a region, including northeastern Colorado.  From there you are presented with an animated satellite display with a number of color enhancement options.  Most notably you can select various overlays including counties, roads, current conditions, radar and much more.  Click here to take a look or you can find the link in the Radar & Maps menu on the left.

1/1/11

  • Our radar system has been greatly enhanced.  Like before you can choose various types of radar displays but now the animation is much higher quality.  You can even zoom in!  Click here to check it out or you can find the link in the Radar & Maps menu on the left.

12/5/10

  • The Citizen Weather Observer Program (CWOP) is a private-public partnership with the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).  Weather station owners like ThorntonWeather.com participate in this data sharing program to provide wide dissemination of weather data for use by citizens and professional meteorologists.  We have proudly taken part in the program for nearly four years.  One of the benefits of the program is the ability to compare the accuracy of data from a given station to others in the nearby area.  ThorntonWeather.com’s sensor system is designed to ensure you are provided with the most accurate conditions available.  You can now view just how accurate our data is by viewing CWOP’s analysis of our system on our CWOP Data Quality page.  It is available from the Almanac / Station Data menu on the left or by clicking here.

3/27/10

  • We all love the beautiful, clear vistas that living at the base of the Rocky Mountains can bring.  However, those mountains also serve to hold in pollution and dust obscuring those views and creating unhealthy breathing conditions.  We have created a new Air Quality Conditions & Forecast page to help you monitor Denver’s air.  Fed by data from the Environmental Protection Agency and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, the page gives you a look at current air quality as well as the forecast for the immediate future.  You can view it from the Forecasts menu on the left.
