Obama power plant rules spark 2016 fight over climate change

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama’s sweeping new power plant regulations are thrusting the divisive debate over climate change into the race for the White House, with candidates in both parties seeing an opportunity to capitalize. To Democrats, rallying around global climate change is a way to energize liberal supporters and paint Republicans as out of… Continue reading Obama power plant rules spark 2016 fight over climate change

Record low maximum temperature set for July 30

With monsoonal moisture streaming into the state and cool air coming in from the north, Denver set its second weather record in as many days.

Denver’s official high temperature yesterday, July 30, as measured at DIA topped out at 62 degrees.  This sets a new record low maximum for the date easily besting the previous mark of 64 degrees set in 2009.

The reading is more akin to what we expect to see in April and October and well below the average high temperature for the date of 90 degrees.

Here in Thornton we matched that reading with 62 degrees as well.

Ironically, Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project was in Denver the past two days for EPA hearings. The group pushed the theme “I’m too hot” while serving up ice cream from Ben & Jerry’s.  Similar hearings were held in Washington DC and Atlanta and both cities saw below normal temperatures.

Perhaps not quite too hot, eh?  It would appear the “Gore Effect” has proven itself again.

On Tuesday Denver set a daily rainfall record as 1.80 inches fell in the bucket that day.

Thornton’s two-day rainfall total came in at 2.03 inches, nearly as much as Denver averages for the entire month of July.

Weather Channel says manmade climate change a factor in dispute with DirecTV

In its fight to stay on the air on DirecTV, The Weather Channel has said that the need to push the global warming theory is a driving factor.
In its fight to stay on the air on DirecTV, The Weather Channel has said that the need to push the global warming theory is a driving factor.

Tuesday morning 20 million subscribers to DirecTV found The Weather Channel missing from their viewing options. The weather network has cited its need to sound the manmade climate change alarm as one of the reasons it needs to be available to the satellite provider’s subscribers.

Some have said that global warming and manmade climate change will bring an increase in “extreme weather” events.

David Kenny, chairman and CEO of The Weather Company, said in a statement today, “This reckless move by DIRECTV will have an impact on our role as part of the national safety and preparedness fabric of our country at a time when the volatility and frequency of weather events seems to be increasing.”

While not overtly mentioning climate change, the implication is there.

Denver sets third high temperature record in past four days; questions about historical comparisons called into question

Denver officially set another high temperature record. However, is it accurate to compare measurements taken at DIA with historical records taken 14 miles away?
Denver officially set another high temperature record. However, is it accurate to compare measurements taken at DIA with historical records taken 14 miles away?

Summer 2013 had been a relatively cool one – up until this latter half of August.  The Mile High City set another record high temperature and while it was assuredly hot, questions continue to arise over the comparison of measurements at DIA with Denver’s historical records.

At 1:34 p.m. the mercury climbed to 99 degrees at Denver International Airport. This beats the previous record high temperature for the date of 98 degrees set in 1987 at the old Stapleton International Airport.

Here in Thornton we were just a bit cooler with the mercury topping out at 97.8 degrees at 2:23 p.m.  This was in fact our second highest temperature of the year.  On June 11 we measured 99.2 degrees.  Click here to view Thornton’s 2013 temperature records.

At midnight tonight we may see yet another record fall. The record high minimum for today’s date is 67 degrees. This morning the temperature only dropped to 71 degrees at DIA. If by midnight we don’t drop to the 67 degree mark, that will be another record for the Mile High City.

Today’s record is the third in the past four days. On Sunday, August 18 we tied the record high for that date of 98 degrees. That followed a record-breaker on Saturday the 17th when the mercury topped 97 degrees, breaking the old record for that date of 96 degrees.

One thing these records do continue to teach us is how invalid it is to compare records at Denver International Airport compared to historical locations where Denver’s official temperature was measured prior to 1994.

Today for instance, the station at Denver City Park recorded 97 degrees.

Hot yes. Record-setting no.

Similarly, on Sunday the 18th City Park recorded 95 degrees versus DIA’s mark of 98 degrees. On Saturday when DIA recorded a record-breaking 97 degrees, City Park saw 96 degrees.

The difference in measurements is something we have seen repeatedly since 1994. The move of Denver’s official monitoring station is corrupting the city’s climate record and has wide implications.

With a location 14 miles east of where official temperatures were measured prior to DIA, it is in an entirely different microclimate and as a result it experiences different conditions – sometimes considerably different – to locations closer to downtown.

If we can’t accurately compare our temperatures, how are we to believe climate change alarmists that warn of global warming?

Nature: Don’t be so quick to blame extreme weather events on climate change

Providing a voice of reason to the sometimes hysterical ravings of climate change alarmists, the scientific journal Nature cautions today that connecting global warming to disasters is not so easy.  The jury is in fact still out on whether extreme weather events can be attributed to anthropogenic global warming, despite what some may say. As Nature points out, there is no empirical evidence that stands up to scrutiny and claims to the contrary only look foolish.  Read the rest of this story on Examiner.com.

Al Gore says climate change dissenters full of [expletive]

Former Vice President Al Gore launched an attack against those that disagree with the manmade climate change theory saying their arguments were "Bulls--t!" (JD Lasica, http://socialmedia.biz)

The passion of Al Gore for the manmade climate change theory is unquestionable.  Since leaving public office he has become the self-appointed spokesman for the movement.  At a forum in Aspen last week the former vice president launched into a profanity filled tirade against those who disagree with him.

The Climate Change Examiner reports that at an event held by the Aspen Institute, Gore called “Bulls–t” to arguments that seek to refute the anthropogenic global warming theory.  Listen to the audio here.

“Gore said that just as the tobacco industry prevented health regulations, so too have corporate interests stopped the advancement of potentially job-killing rules such as Cap and Trade,” the Examiner writes.

More than that, Gore goes on to say:

The model they innovated in that effort was transported whole cloth into the climate debate. And some of the exact same people — by name, I can go down a list of their names — are involved in this. And so what do they do? They pay pseudo-scientists, to pretend to be scientists, to put out the message: “This climate thing, it’s nonsense. Man-made CO2 doesn’t trap heat. It may be volcanoes.” Bulls–t! “It may be sun spots.” Bulls–t! “It’s not getting warmer.” Bulls–t!

And there are about 10 other memes that are out there, and when you go and talk to any audience about climate, you hear them washing back at you. The same crap, over and over and over again … There is no longer a shared reality on an issue like climate even though the very existence of our civilization is threatened. People have no idea! And yet our ability to actually come to a shared reality that emphasizes the best evidence … It’s no longer acceptable in mixed company, meaning bipartisan company, to use the goddamn word “climate.”

That is quite a mouthful from the former VP.

Head on over to the Climate Change Examiner for the complete story include audio of Gore’s rant.

Aspen symposium hosts global warming cheerleader Al Gore

Despite having been proven wrong in the past, at a symposium in Aspen this weekend Al Gore once again tried to tie recent severe weather to global warming.

Former Vice President Al Gore spoke at the “Forests at Risk: Climate Change and the Future of the American West” symposium in Aspen this weekend issuing a dire warning about global warming. Gore told the crowd, “It’s unprecedented and we really have to face up to it.”

The Nobel Laureate and author of the book and movie “An Inconvenient Truth” warned that the pine beetle infestation striking Colorado forests was caused by manmade climate change.  “If you love the forest and you care about what’s happening to them, the No. 1 connection that’s happening to them is warmer temperatures,” Gore told the compliant crowd.

The Denver Weather Examiner reports:

Utilizing a slideshow to demonstrate his point, Gore said, “The linkage these scientists have referred to over and over again with global warming is something some people resist but it’s a fact.”

Using the common refrain that significant weather events are related to man’s actions affecting the climate, Gore pointed to recent flooding in Brazil and Australia and last year’s flooding in his home state of Tennessee as evidence of this.

Gore’s attempts to draw parallels between weather and climate change have gotten him into trouble in the past.  He was forced to pull images from his popular presentation two years ago that showed an increase in natural disasters when it was found it could not be proven.  NASA’s top climate scientist Dr. James Hansen has rebuked Gore saying he needed to be more “careful” in his claims.

The claims that Gore made at the symposium have been refuted in the past but he remains undeterred.  Get more details on what the former VP said as well as counter arguments on the Denver Weather Examiner.

NOAA: 2010 ties as second warmest year on record

Data released by NOAA puts 2010 into the history books as tying with 2005 as the warmest year globally since 1880.  The newly released report is sure to fuel the ongoing climate change and global warming debate for the year to come.

The National Climatic Data Center’s information shows that the combined global land and ocean temperatures in 2010 were 1.12° F (0.62° C) above the 20th century average.  This ties the year with 2005 as the warmest on record.

Land surface temperatures globally were the warmest on record as a temperature anomaly of 1.8° F (1.0° C) was recorded.  The oceans fared better according to the NCDC with temperatures 0.88° F (0.49° C) above the 20th century average putting it in the books typing with as the third warmest on record.

The United States separately was warm as well although not in record-setting form.  Warmer than average temperatures were recorded across much of the nation with the south being the exception.  NOAA said that temperatures are increasing at a rate of 0.12° F per decade.
