Typically November is a quiet weather month with plenty of nice, fall days but it can also turn wet with healthy doses of snow and moisture.  The wide variety of conditions can create picturesque scenes ranging from blue skies and snow-capped mountains to a wintry wonderland in the metro area.

November is the second snowiest month of the year so winter conditions are not unusual.  Typically though, these bouts of cold are short-lived and normal daytime conditions are pleasant.

Outdoor activities continue to be quite popular during the month.  The cooling temperatures do oftentimes lead to an increase in wildlife activity.

All of the above help lead to a month in which a wide variety of scenes, flora and fauna can be captured.

Stunning video captures Colorado’s gorgeous fall colors

We happened across this video recently and had to share it. Photographer Jason Hatfield is a transplant to Colorado and has spent recent years filming our fall foliage. The end result? An amazing compilation of the high country in autumn.

From Jason’s description:

For the 8 years I’ve lived in Colorado, I’ve been most enthralled by the short but incredible fall foliage season in the high country. I’ve experienced the magnificent autumn colors of the East Coast and Midwest, but nothing for me has compared to the scenes of massive mountains rising from stunning forests of gold-covered aspens. For the past 5 years of filming, I’ve had this moment in my head, a finished time-lapse piece that turns Colorado’s extraordinary fall landscapes into living art. Some years I only came away with a couple good sequences, others a lot more, and finally after this season I felt I had the work I needed to produce my vision. Please enjoy this short film that embodies everything I love about my state.

Photo: A snow-covered landscape at sunrise

We headed out this morning looking for bald eagles at Cherry Creek State Park. Certainly saw LOTS of them but also enjoyed a beautiful morning with the snow-covered trees and blue skies.

Our view while on vacation in southwestern Colorado

Many folks noticed the lack of new stories post last week other than a photo or two on our Facebook page.  We took the week off for some much needed R & R and were able to enjoy one of our favorite parts of the state.

The image below was taken in Gunnison National Forest a little ways north of Taylor Reservoir.  In the foreground is Lilly Pond, in the background the Collegiate Peaks.

The stunning greens and blues truly were as bright as the image shows.  While rain was far too prevalent for our liking during our time in the area, the scenery was amazing.

Public access to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge has increased greatly now that they allow visitors to drive their own vehicles through the facility.  We have taken advantage of it over the past couple of weeks and have enjoyed some extraordinary photo opportunities.

A wide variety of birds are available for viewing but the hawks and eagles draw the most attention.  These are readily seen throughout the refuge although the trees right near the entrance seem to be a very popular spot with them.  We were able to get extraordinarily close to one bald eagle that didn’t seem to mind visitors at all.

Deer and of course prairie dogs abound at the arsenal and are easily spotted.  Also routinely seen are coyotes but seeing them requires a keen eye as they blend in with the grass.

Up until this past week the refuge’s bison herd largely had remained out of sight.  Most were in areas not accessible to the public and the few that were mostly stayed hidden.  This week though the herd moved into the main area and on our recent visit we found them right on the road.

Below are some of the photos we have taken in recent weeks.
