2010 Year in Review - A month by month narrative from the National Weather Service.

While Denver’s weather in 2010 was generally pretty quiet that isn’t to say there wasn’t something to talk about.  Below is a month by month narrative from the National Weather Service for each month of the year.

Also be sure to check out Thornton’s 2010 weather year in review.

From the National Weather Service:

JANUARY…ONLY A TOTAL OF 0.07 INCH OF LIQUID EQUIVALENT WAS COLLECTED DURING JANUARY 2010 WHICH CAME FROM MELTED SNOWFALL. THIS IS 0.44 INCH BELOW THE NORMAL OF 0.51 INCH. IT ALSO TIED 1961 AS THE 6TH DRIEST JANUARY SINCE DENVER RECORDS KEEPING BEGAN IN 1872. ONLY 2 DAYS RECORDED MEASURABLE MOISTURE WITH THE 6TH COLLECTING THE MOST IN A 24 HOUR PERIOD WITH ONLY 0.05 INCH. IN THE SNOWFALL DEPARTMENT WHERE MEASUREMENTS ARE TAKEN NEAR THE DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (DIA)… ONLY 2.6 INCHES OF THE WHITE STUFF WAS RECORDED. THIS AGAIN WAS BELOW THE JANUARY NORMAL OF 7.7 INCHES. FOR THE SEASON…THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THE JULY THROUGH JANUARY’S SEASONAL TOTAL WAS 40.2 INCHES WHICH IS 6.9 INCHES ABOVE THE NORM OF 33.3 INCHES FOR THAT PERIOD OF TIME. 40.2 INCHES IS FAR BETTER THAN THE 2008-09 SEASONAL TOTAL THROUGH JANUARY OF A MERE 16.9 INCHES. THERE WERE NO PRECIPITATION RECORDS SET OR TIED DURING THE MONTH.

JANUARY 2010 TEMPERATURE STATISTICS TURNED OUT TO BE A NON-HEADLINE. THE MONTH FINISHED WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 30.4 DEGREES WHICH IS 1.2 DEGREES ABOVE THE 29.2 NORMAL. TEMPERATURES RANGED FROM A HIGH OF 58 DEGREES DOWN TO A LOW OF A NON-RECORD -16 DEGREES. IN FACT… THERE WERE NO TEMPERATURE RECORDS SET OR TIED DURING JANUARY 2010. ALL 31 DAYS HAD LOW TEMPERATURES AT OR BELOW FREEZING AND 3 DAYS HAD MINIMUM TEMPERATURES BELOW ZERO. TWO DAYS HAD HIGH MERCURY READINGS AT OR BELOW FREEZING. JANUARY 2009 SEEMED LIKE A COOL MONTH AS THERE WERE ONLY 7 READINGS THAT REACHED INTO THE FIFTIES. OBVIOUSLY THE REST OF THE MONTH ONLY SAW READINGS IN THE 40S OR BELOW.

THREE DAYS HAD DENSE FOG (VISIBILITY OF 1/4 MILE OR LESS) RECORDED AT DIA. LIGHT FOG WAS OBSERVED ON 8 DAYS. THE PEAK WIND DURING THE MONTH WAS A FAIRLY LIGHT GUST OF 35 MPH FROM A NORTHWESTERLY DIRECTION (310 DEGREES).

FEBRUARY…IT WAS A COOL FEBRUARY WITH THE MONTH FINISHING WITH A 29.1 DEGREE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WHICH WAS 4.1 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 33.2 DEGREES. EVEN THOUGH IT WAS 4.1 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL…IT WAS STILL 3.9 DEGREES BELOW THE 10TH COLDEST FEBRUARY WHICH WAS 25.2 DEGREES ESTABLISHED IN 1905. THE COLDEST FEBRUARY OCCURRED IN 1954 WITH A VERY FRIGID 17.6 DEGREE AVERAGE. THE FEBRUARY AVERAGE OF 29.1 DEGREES WAS COLDER THAN THE JANUARY 2010 30.4 DEGREE AVERAGE. TEMPERATURES DURING FEBRUARY RANGED FROM A HIGH OF 52 DEGREES ON THE 27TH DOWN TO A LOW OF -1 DEGREE ON THE 9TH. ONLY 3 DAYS DURING THE MONTH REGISTERED HIGHS IN THE 50S. ALL 28 DAYS REGISTERED OVERNIGHT LOW TEMPERATURES AT OR BELOW FREEZING WITH 8 DAYS WHEN THE HIGH TEMPERATURE DID NOT REACH ABOVE 32 DEGREES. ONLY 1 LOW TEMPERATURE DIPPED BELOW ZERO.

PRECIPITATION WAS ALSO BELOW NORMAL. THE MONTH FINISHED WITH ONLY 0.30 INCH OF LIQUID WHICH WAS MEASURED FROM WATER EQUIVALENT OF SNOW. THIS EQUATED TO 0.19 INCH BELOW THE NORMAL OF 0.49 INCH. NINE DAYS RECORDED MEASURABLE MOISTURE BUT THERE WAS NO DAYS THAT ACCUMULATED .10 INCH OR MORE. THE MAXIMUM 24 HOUR LIQUID MEASUREMENT WAS 0.10 INCH BUT THAT COVERED 2 DAYS…THE 7TH AND 8TH. IN THE SNOWFALL DEPARTMENT…5.8 INCHES OF SNOWFALL WAS MEASURED AT THE AIRPORT. THIS WAS ONLY 0.5 INCH BELOW THE NORM OF 6.3 INCHES. THE 24 HOUR SNOWFALL MAXIMUM WAS 1.7 INCHES ON THE 20TH AND 21ST. THERE WERE NO PRECIPITATION OR SNOWFALL RECORDS SET OR TIED DURING THE MONTH. THE DRIEST FEBRUARY WAS 0.01 INCH COLLECTED IN 1970 AND THE WETTEST FEBRUARY WAS 2.01 INCHES IN 1934. THE MOST FEBRUARY SNOW OCCURRED IN 1912 WITH 22.1 INCHES WHILE THE LEAST AMOUNT OF FEBRUARY SNOWFALL WAS A TRACE WHICH OCCURRED JUST LAST YEAR…2009.

THE AVERAGE FEBRUARY WIND SPEED WAS 7.6 MILES PER HOUR WHILE THE PEAK GUST DURING THE MONTH WAS ONLY 35 MPH FROM A SOUTHWESTERLY DIRECTION (210 DEGREES).

MARCH…DENVER’S MARCH 2010 FINISHED WITH BELOW NORMAL LIQUID MOISTURE IN SPITE OF FINISHING ABOVE NORMAL IN THE SNOWFALL CATEGORY. THE LIQUID TOTAL WAS 0.80 INCH WHICH WAS 0.48 INCH BELOW THE NORMAL OF 1.28 INCHES. IN A SINGLE 24 HOUR PERIOD…0.61 INCH OF MOISTURE WAS MEASURED ON THE 23RD. THERE WERE 6 DAYS WITH MEASURABLE MOISTURE…TWO DAYS WITH A TENTH OF AN INCH OR MORE AND ONE DAY WITH 0.5 INCH OR MORE. FOR SNOWFALL… 12.8 INCHES WAS MEASURED AT THE DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT OF WHICH 10.8 INCHES FELL BETWEEN THE 23RD AND 24TH. THE GREATEST SNOW DEPTH DURING THE MONTH OCCURRED ON THE 24TH WHEN THE TOTAL DEPTH WAS 8 INCHES. IT WAS THE 3RD MONTH THIS SNOW SEASON WITH ABOVE NORMAL MONTHLY SNOWFALL. AND THE GOOD NEWS SO FAR THIS SNOW SEASON IS THE TOTAL FROM JULY 2009 THROUGH MARCH 2010 IS 58.8 INCHES WHICH IS 7.5 INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 51.3 INCHES.

THE MONTH FINISHED WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 41.0 DEGREES WHICH IS 1.4 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS AVERAGE WAS NOT ANY WHERE NEAR WARM ENOUGH TO GET INTO THE TOP TEN. THE 1OTH WARMEST MARCH WAS 45.2 DEGREES AND THE WARMEST EVER MARCH WAS A VERY WARM 50.4 DEGREES RECORDED IN 1910. 23 DAYS RECORDED LOW TEMPERATURES AT OR BELOW FREEZING WHICH IS 1 BELOW THE NORM. TEMPERATURES RANGED FROM A RECORD SETTING 82 DEGREES ON THE 30TH DOWN TO A LOW OF 13 DEGREES ON THE 20TH. THE 82 READING BROKE THE 81 DEGREE RECORD SET WAY BACK WHEN RUTHERFORD B. HAYES WAS OUR 19TH PRESIDENT IN 1879. IT WAS THE ONLY RECORD SET DURING THE MONTH AND IT WAS THE FIRST NEW TEMPERATURE RECORD SINCE NOVEMBER 2009.

THE FIRST THUNDERSTORM OF 2010 WAS OBSERVED ON THE 23RD. IT WAS A THUNDER SNOW STORM THAT WAS ASSOCIATED WITH THE 10.8 INCHES OF SNOWFALL AND 0.61 INCH OF LIQUID EQUIVALENT. THERE WERE 14 DAYS WITH LIGHT FOG AND 5 DAYS WITH DENSE FOG WHERE THE VISIBILITY WAS REDUCED TO 1/4 MILE OR LESS.

THE PEAK WIND DURING THE MONTH WAS 47 MILES PER HOUR FROM A NORTHERLY DIRECTION (010 DEGREES).

APRIL…DENVER’S PRECIPITATION TOTAL THROUGH APRIL 20TH WAS HEADING FOR A SPOT IN THE TOP TEN DRIEST APRILS. BUT THEN THE SKIES OPENED UP AND FROM APRIL 21ST THROUGH THE 25TH…2.31 INCHES OF MOSTLY RAIN AND SOME SNOW COLLECTED IN THE DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT’S (DIA) RAIN BUCKET. OBVIOUSLY THAT KICKED APRIL 2010 OUT OF THE TOP TEN DRIEST APRILS. THE MONTH FINISHED WITH A RESPECTABLE 2.51 INCHES OF MOISTURE WHICH WAS 0.58 INCH ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 1.93 INCHES. THE 24 HOUR MAXIMUM TOTAL OF 1.57 INCHES BETWEEN THE 22ND AND 23RD WAS NOT ENOUGH TO SET A 24 HOUR RECORD. THE CALENDAR DAY MAXIMUM WAS 1.09 INCHES THAT WAS RECORDED ON THE 23RD. EVEN THOUGH 2.51 INCHES WAS APRIL’S TOTAL…IT WAS NOT NEAR ENOUGH TO JUMP INTO THE TOP TEN WETTEST APRILS. IN 10TH PLACE WAS 1914 WITH 3.75 INCHES AND THE WETTEST APRIL OCCURRED IN 1900 WITH A VERY WET 8.24 INCHES MONTHLY TOTAL. APRIL 2010 REGISTERED 8 DAYS WITH MEASURABLE LIQUID AND 2 DAYS WITH 0.50 INCH OR MORE.

THE MONTH FINISHED VERY NEAR NORMAL IN THE TEMPERATURE CATEGORY. THE MONTHLY AVERAGE WAS 47.8 DEGREES WHICH WAS ONLY 0.2 DEGREE ABOVE NORMAL. TEMPERATURES RANGED FROM A HIGH OF 79 DEGREES ON THE 28TH DOWN TO A LOW OF 26 DEGREES ON THE 2ND. THERE WERE 15 DAYS WHEN THE OVERNIGHT MERCURY READING DIPPED TO FREEZING OR BELOW. ALL OF THE DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURES EXCEEDED THE 32 DEGREE MARK. THE LOWEST HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS 46 DEGREES ALSO RECORDED ON THE 2ND. THE WARMEST APRIL WAS REGISTERED IN 1981 WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 56.4 DEGREES WHILE THE COOLEST APRIL WAS 38.8 DEGREES RECORDED IN 1920.

THE SECOND THUNDERSTORM OF THE SEASON WAS OBSERVED AT DIA AND IT OCCURRED ON THE 22ND AND THIS STORM PRODUCED 0.87 INCH OF RAINFALL. THERE WAS NO HAIL RECORDED AT DIA DURING APRIL. THERE WERE 3 DAYS THAT RECORDED VISIBILITIES AT OR BELOW 1/4 MILE DUE TO FOG. THE PEAK WIND DURING THE MONTH WAS 63 MPH RECORDED ON THE 4TH AND IT WAS NOT A THUNDERSTORM RELATED WIND GUST.

MAY…FOR THE 1ST HALF OF MAY 2010, IT APPEARED THAT MAY 2010 WAS DESTINED TO BE ONE OF DENVER’S TOP TEN COLDEST AND AT ONE TIME IT WAS THE COLDEST MAY SINCE DENVER RECORD KEEPING BEGAN IN 1872. BUT MOTHER NATURE HAS A WAY OF MIXING UP CLIMATOLOGICAL PARAMETERS AND IN SO DURING THE LAST THIRD OF THE MONTH…DAILY MAX AND MIN TEMPERATURES CREPT ABOVE NORMAL WHICH IN TURN BROUGHT THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE UP ENOUGH TO COMPLETELY GET OUT OF THE TOP 10 COLDEST MAYS. THE MONTH FINISHED WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 54.0 DEGREES WHICH WAS STILL BELOW NORMAL BUT ONLY 3.2 DEGREES BELOW THE NORM. THE TENTH PLACE HOLDER OF COLDEST MAYS WAS A 53.0 AVERAGE RECORDED IN BOTH 1950 AND 1898. THE ABSOLUTE COLDEST MAY SINCE 1872 WAS A VERY COLD 48.7 DEGREES SET BACK IN 1917. MAY 2010 DID REGISTER THE FIRST 90 DEGREE READING OF THE YEAR WHICH WAS RECORDED ON THE 28TH. THIS 90 DEGREE READING WAS NOT A RECORD FOR THE 28TH. TEMPERATURES DURING THE MONTH RANGED FROM A HIGH OF 90 DEGREES DOWN TO A LOW OF 28 DEGREES RECORDED ON BOTH THE 1ST AND THE 8TH. THERE WERE 7 DAYS WHEN THE MERCURY WENT TO THE FREEZING MARK OR BELOW WHICH IS 5 MORE THAN NORMAL.

IN THE PRECIPITATION DEPARTMENT…THE FIRST HALF OF THE MONTH SAW PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS FINALLY CLIMB ABOVE NORMAL. BUT LIKE THE TEMPERATURES…THE LACK OF MOISTURE THAT WAS COLLECTED DURING THE LATTER DAYS OF THE MONTH CAUSED THE MONTH TOTAL TO FALL BELOW THE MAY NORMAL. TOTAL MOISTURE… WHICH INCLUDED 1.3 INCHES OF SNOW ON THE 12TH…AMOUNTED TO 1.52 INCHES WHICH WAS 0.80 INCH BELOW THE NORMAL OF 2.32 INCHES. THERE WERE 8 DAYS WITH MEASURABLE MOISTURE OF WHICH 2 SAW MORE THAN .10 INCH AND 1 DAY EXCEEDED THE HALF INCH TOTAL…THE 11TH WITH A 0.98 INCH TOTAL. SNOWFALL ONLY OCCURRED ON ONE DAY WHICH WAS THE 12TH AND THE 1.3 INCHES WAS THE EXACT NORMAL FOR MAY SNOWFALL. ONE INCH OF SNOW DEPTH WAS RECORDED AT THE DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

THERE WERE 5 DAYS WHEN THUNDERSTORMS WERE OBSERVED BY THE DIA OBSERVERS. ON THE 26TH…A TORNADO WAS OBSERVED 4 MILES WEST OF THE AIRPORT. NO DAMAGE WAS REPORTED WITH THIS TORNADO. ALSO ON THE 18TH…SMALL HAIL WAS RECORDED AT DIA. EIGHT DAYS HAD FOG REPORTED WITH 3 DAYS REGISTERING VISIBILITY DROPPING TO 1/4 MILE OR LESS.

THE PEAK WIND GUST DURING MAY 2010 WAS A RECORD BREAKING 64 MPH FROM SOUTHWESTERLY DIRECTION (220). THE OLD RECORD WAS 60 MPH REGISTERED IN 1991.

JUNE…THE FIRST HALF OF JUNE 2010 KEPT DENVER IN A FAIRLY COOL AND SOMEWHAT MOIST ATMOSPHERE BEFORE DRYING OUT AND HEATING UP DURING THE LAST HALF OF THE MONTH. TEMPERATURES DURING THE MONTH RANGED FROM A NON-RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 99 DEGREES ON JUNE 25TH DOWN TO A LOW OF 47 DEGREES THAT ACTUALLY OCCURRED 4 TIMES DURING THE MONTH. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE READING FOR THE MONTH WAS 68.9 DEGREES WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE ONLY 1.3 DEGREES ABOVE THE JUNE NORMAL NOT ANYWHERE NEAR ANY TOP TEN CATEGORY. ONLY ONE HIGH TEMPERATURE RECORD WAS TIED DURING THE MONTH…93 DEGREES ON THE 4TH WHICH TIES WITH 1990. THERE WERE 10 DAYS WITH 90 OR ABOVE READINGS WHICH IS 4 ABOVE NORMAL. FOR THE SEASON NOW…THERE HAVE BEEN 10 NINETY DEGREE READINGS. CONVERSELY…2009 DID NOT REGISTER A 90 DEGREE DAY IN JUNE.

JUNE 2010 WAS SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL IN THE PRECIPITATION DEPARTMENT. THE MONTH FINISHED WITH A TOTAL OF 1.60 INCHES WHICH WAS JUST 0.04 INCH ABOVE NORMAL. BETWEEN THE 11TH AND 12TH…1.25 INCHES OF RAINFALL FELL INTO THE RAIN BUCKET. ON THE 11TH…SMALL HAIL ALONG WITH A FUNNEL CLOUD WAS OBSERVED AT THE DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (DIA). ALTHOUGH DENVER’S JUNE IS CONSIDERED AS DENVER’S SEVERE WEATHER MONTH, ONLY EIGHT THUNDERSTORMS WERE RECORDED BY THE DIA OBSERVERS AND ONLY THE ONE DAY HAD SMALL HAIL REPORTED.

THERE WERE 7 DAYS WITH LIGHT FOG AND 1 DAY WHEN THE VISIBILITY DROPPED TO 1/4 MILE OR LESS. THE PEAK WIND GUST FOR THE MONTH WAS ONLY 46 MPH FROM A SOUTHWESTERLY DIRECTION (220 DEGREES)

JULY…IT WAS A WET MONTH FOR DENVER DURING JULY 2010. 3.70 INCH OF LIQUID COLLECTED IN THE RAIN CONTAINER WHICH WAS A MERE 0.01 INCH FROM TIEING THE 10TH WETTEST DENVER JULY. THIS TOTAL WAS 1.54 INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL JULY AMOUNT OF 2.16 INCHES. THE WETTEST JULY WAS 6.41 INCHES SET BACK IN 1965. THE DRIEST JULY WAS AN INCREDIBLE 0.01 INCH RECORDED IN 1901. THIS JULY THERE WERE 13 DAYS WITH MEASURABLE MOISTURE WHICH IS 0.01 INCH OR MORE. FIVE DAYS RECORDED A TENTH OR MORE…TWO DAYS HAD A HALF AN INCH OR MORE AND THERE WERE 2 DAYS THAT ACTUALLY MEASURED MORE THAN AN INCH. 1.84 INCHES OF RAINFALL ON JULY 4TH SET A NEW 24 HOUR CALENDAR DAY RECORD BREAKING THE OLD RECORD OF 1.44 INCHES SET IN 1909. THE 24 HOUR DENVER RAINFALL RECORD IS 6.53 INCHES RECORDED RECORDED BETWEEN THE 21ST AND 22ND OF MAY IN 1876.

IT WAS ALSO A WARM JULY IN DENVER DURING 2010. NOT WARM ENOUGH TO GET THE TOP TEN WARMEST (76.4 DEGREES IN 1980) BUT STILL IT WAS 1.0 DEGREE ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 73.4 DEGREES. THE MONTH FINISHED WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 74.4 DEGREES. THE WARMEST DENVER JULY WHICH IS ALSO THE HOTTEST DENVER MONTH SINCE 1872 OCCURRED IN 1934 WITH AN AVERAGE MERCURY READING OF 77.8 DEGREES. THE COLDEST JULY WAS 67.4 DEGREES REGISTERED IN 1895. THERE WERE 18 DAYS THAT REGISTERED TEMPERATURES 90 DEGREES OR HIGHER WITH ONE RECORD SETTING 102 DEGREE TEMPERATURE RECORDED ON JULY 17TH. ALSO WORTH MENTIONING… THERE WAS ONE 90 DEGREE STREAK OF 8 DAYS FROM JULY 12TH THROUGH THE 19TH. MERCURY READINGS DURING THE MONTH RANGED FROM THE RECORD SETTING 102 DEGREES DOWN TO 3 READINGS OF 53 DEGREES.

FOURTEEN THUNDERSTORMS WERE OBSERVED AT THE DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT OF WHICH ONE PRODUCED PEA TO MARBLE SIZE HAIL AT THE AIRPORT. THE HAIL WAS RECORDED ON JULY 4TH. FOUR DAYS HAD LIGHT FOG WITH ONE DAY RECORDING VISIBILITY DOWN TO 1/4 MILE OR LESS. THE PEAK WIND FOR THE MONTH OCCURRED TWICE…48 MPH ON THE 4TH AND THE 30TH  FROM DIRECTIONS OF 060 (NE) AND 340 (NW) RESPECTIVELY. HIGHEST SEA-LEVEL PRESSURE WAS 30.20 INCHES ON THE 7TH WHILE THE LOWEST PRESSURE WAS 29.46 INCHES ON THE 3RD.

AUGUST…AUGUST 2010 FLIRTED THE ENTIRE MONTH TRYING TO GET INTO THE TOP 10 WARMEST DENVER’S AUGUST. BUT THE LAST 7 DAYS OF THE MONTH SAW A TOP TEN PLACEMENT DISAPPEAR AS THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE DROPPED TO 73.8 DEGREES. THIS WAS 2.1 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL BUT 0.3 DEGREE BELOW THE TENTH PLACE WARMEST AUGUST OF 74.1 DEGREES SET BACK IN 1947. THE ALL TIME WARMEST AUGUST HAD AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 76.8 DEGREES SET IN 1937. THE HOTTEST EVER DENVER AUGUST OCCURRED IN 1934 WITH A SCALDING 77.8 AVERAGE TEMPERATURE. THIS YEAR THE MERCURY READINGS RANGED FROM A NON RECORD READING OF 97 DEGREES ON THE 22ND DOWN TO A NON RECORD OF 47 DEGREES REGISTERED ON THE 17TH. THERE WERE TWELVE 90 DEGREE DAYS RECORDED WHICH WAS 3 ABOVE NORMAL. FOR THE YEAR SO FAR…THERE HAVE BEEN 41 NINETY DEGREE DAYS COMPARED TO A NORMAL OF 31. ONLY 1 TEMPERATURE RECORD WAS TIED…67 DEGREES TIED A RECORD HIGH MINIMUM FOR AUGUST 18TH WITH 1986.

FOR PRECIPITATION…THE MONTH FINISHED WITH A RESPECTABLE 1.05 INCH TOTAL BUT THIS WAS STILL 0.77 INCH BELOW NORMAL. THE MONTH STARTED OFF QUITE NICELY AND IN THE FIRST 7 DAYS 1.05 INCHES OF THE TOTAL 1.07 INCHES HAD ALREADY BEEN COLLECTED. HOPES WERE HIGH FOR A WETTER THAN NORMAL AUGUST BUT FROM THE 8TH THROUGH THE 31ST…ONLY 0.02 INCH MORE LIQUID WAS COLLECTED IN THE RAIN BUCKET. OF THE TOTAL 1.05 INCHES…0.68 INCH OF RAINFALL FELL EXCLUSIVELY ON THE FIRST.

THERE WERE 10 DAYS AT THE AIRPORT WHERE THUNDER WAS REPORTED BUT THE STORMS ONLY PRODUCED LIGHT TO MODERATE RAINFALL. NO HAIL OR SEVERE WEATHER WAS OBSERVED FROM THE 10 STORM DAYS. THERE WERE 3 DAYS WITH FOG WITH ONE DAY RECORDING DENSE FOG WITH VISIBILITY REDUCED TO 1/4 MILE OR LESS. THE PEAK WIND GUST DURING THE MONTH WAS 45 MPH FROM A NORTHWESTERLY DIRECTION (340 DEGREES) AND IT WAS REGISTERED ON THE 12TH AND AGAIN ON THE 16TH.

SEPTEMBER…BETWEEN THE 18TH AND 22ND OF SEPTEMBER…THE DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT COLLECTED A TOTAL OF ONLY 0.06 INCH OF MOISTURE. THE REMAINING 25 DAYS OF THE MONTH WERE TOTALLY DRY…NOT EVEN A TRACE OF LIQUID. BETWEEN AUGUST 8TH AND SEPTEMBER 30TH ONLY 0.08 INCH OF RAINFALL WAS TALLIED. EVEN CLOUDS HAD A HARD TIME DEVELOPING DUE TO THE DRYNESS OF THE ATMOSPHERE. SEPTEMBER FINISHED IN A 3 WAY TIE AS THE 5TH DRIEST SEPTEMBER WITH 1882 AND 1920 WITH THE 0.06 PRECIPITATION TOTAL. THE DRIEST SEPTEMBER OCCURRED IN 1892 AND 1944 WITH MERE TRACES RECORDED. THE RECORD PRECIPITATION AMOUNT FOR SEPTEMBER WAS 4.67 INCHES MEASURED IN 1961. THERE WAS ONLY ONE THUNDERSTORM OBSERVED AT THE AIRPORT…3 BELOW NORMAL…BUT IT DID NOT PRODUCE ANY RAINFALL.

SEPTEMBER 2010 PRODUCED 4 RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURES. THE 96 DEGREE RECORD ON THE 19TH WAS THE NEW HOTTEST TEMPERATURE THAT LATE IN THE SEASON SURPASSING THE 95 DEGREE READING ON SEPTEMBER 17TH. IT ALSO BROKE THE OLD RECORD OF 93 DEGREES LAST SET IN 1980. OTHER HIGH TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE: 94 ON THE 20TH…OLD 92 LAST SET IN 1956; 90 TIED RECORD ON THE 26TH WITH 1892; 92 ON THE 28TH…OLD 89 LAST SET IN 1994. THE MONTH FINISHED IN A TIE WITH 1939 AS THE 7TH WARMEST SEPTEMBER. MERCURY READINGS RANGED FROM A HIGH OF 96 DOWN TO LOW READING OF 40 ON THE 3RD. THERE WERE 8 NINETY DEGREE DAYS WHICH WAS 6 ABOVE THE NORM. FOR THE SEASON NOW…THERE HAVE BEEN 49 NINETY DEGREE DAYS WHICH IS 16 ABOVE NORMAL. ONE NOTEWORTHY STATISTIC WAS THAT DURING SEPTEMBER 2010 THERE WERE 25 DAYS THAT RECORDED TEMPERATURES OF 80 DEGREES OR HIGHER. ACCORDING TO LOCAL CLIMATOLOGICAL RECORDS…THAT IS THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF 80 DEGREE TEMPERATURES FOR SEPTEMBER IN DENVER SINCE 1872. THE WARMEST SEPTEMBER WAS 68.3 DEGREES RECORDED IN 1948.

FOUR DAYS HAD LIGHT FOG WITH ONE DAY RECORDING DENSE FOG WITH VISIBILITY LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO 1/4 MILE. THE PEAK WIND WAS 44 MPH FROM A NORTHWESTERLY DIRECTION (320 DEGREES).

OCTOBER…OCTOBER 2010 WAS WARMER AND DRIER THAN NORMAL BUT NOT WARM OR DRY ENOUGH TO GET INTO EITHER TOP 10 CATEGORY. THE TEMPERATURES RANGED FROM A HIGH OF 85 DEGREES ON THE 3RD DOWN TO A LOW OF 20 DEGREES ON THE 28TH. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS A WARM 55.3 DEGREES WHICH WAS 4.3 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. NO TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE SET OR TIED DURING THE MONTH. AMAZINGLY…THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE DURING OCTOBER 2009 WAS 42.9 DEGREES WHICH WAS 12.4 DEGREES COLDER THAN THIS YEAR’S AVERAGE. THIS OCTOBER… THERE WERE ONLY 2 DAYS WHEN THE MINIMUM TEMPERATURE DROPPED TO 32 DEGREES OR BELOW. THIS COMPARES TO 17 DAYS WITH 32 DEGREES OR LOWER DURING OCTOBER 2009. THE NORMAL NUMBER OF DAYS WITH LOWS BELOW 32 DEGREES IS 9. THERE WERE 300 HEATING DEGREE DAYS THIS YEAR COMPARED TO 676 LAST YEAR DURING OCTOBER. THIS OCTOBER…THERE WERE 8 COOLING DEGREE DAYS WHILE LAST YEAR THERE WERE NONE. THE WARMEST OCTOBER WAS IN 1950 WITH AN INCREDIBLE 59.9 AVERAGE MERCURY READING WHILE THE COLDEST WAS A CHILLY 39.0 RECORDED IN 1969. OCTOBER 2009 FINISHED AS THE SECOND COLDEST OCTOBER IN DENVER WEATHER HISTORY SINCE 1872 WHILE OCTOBER 2010 APPEARED TO HAVE RANKED AS THE 11TH WARMEST…0.1 DEGREE BELOW THE 10TH PLACE HOLDER.

PRECIPITATION DURING OCTOBER 2010 WAS ON THE DISMAL SIDE. ONLY 0.54 INCH FELL INTO THE RAIN BUCKET COMPARED TO THE OCTOBER NORMAL OF 0.99 INCH. THERE WERE ONLY 4 DAYS WITH MEASURABLE MOISTURE. A DECENT AMOUNT OF RAINFALL WAS COLLECTED ON THE 12TH WHEN 0.34 INCH REGISTERED IN THE GAGE WHICH WAS MORE THAN HALF OF THE MONTH’S TOTAL. THE WETTEST OCTOBER WAS 4.17 INCHES IN 1969 WHILE THE DRIEST WAS ONLY A TRACE IN 1934. SNOWFALL WAS NON-EXISTENT DURING OCTOBER WHICH IS THE 15TH TIME SINCE 1882 THAT THERE WAS NO SNOWFALL IN DENVER DURING OCTOBER. THE LAST TIME WHEN OCTOBER HAD ZERO SNOWFALL WAS IN 2003. THERE WERE 14 TIMES SINCE 1882 WHEN OCTOBER ONLY SQUEEZED OUT A TRACE OF SNOWFALL. THE AVERAGE SNOWFALL FOR OCTOBER IS 4.1 INCHES. SEASONAL SNOWFALL SO FAR…JULY THROUGH OCTOBER…REMAINS AT ZERO.

THERE WERE 3 DAYS AT THE DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WHEN THUNDERSTORMS WERE OBSERVED. TOTAL PRECIPITATION FROM THE 3 STORMS WAS A MERE 0.02 INCH. THERE WERE 2 DAYS WITH FOG…WITH THE MORNING OF THE 23RD REPORTING DENSE FOG (VISIBILITY 1/4 MILE OR LESS). PEAK WIND FOR THE MONTH WAS 51 MPH FROM A NORTHERLY DIRECTON (350 DEGREES).

NOVEMBER…NOVEMBER 2010 TURNED OUT TO BE QUITE DRY WITH 0.49 INCH COLLECTED IN THE RAIN BUCKET WHICH IS HALF OF THE NORMAL NOVEMBER READING OF 0.98 INCH. FIVE DAYS RECORDED MEASURABLE MOISTURE AND 2 DAYS EXCEEDED 0.10 INCH. THE NOVEMBER TOTAL WAS NOT NEAR DRY ENOUGH TO GET INTO THE TOP 10 DRIEST. IN THE 10TH SPOT WAS 0.15 INCH RECORDED IN 1989. THE DRIEST NOVEMBER OCCURRED 3 TIMES WITH A MERE TRACE OF LIQUID RECORDED IN 1949…1901 AND 1899. SNOWFALL WAS ALSO ON THE DISMAL SIDE WITH ONLY 1.5 INCHES OF THE WHITE STUFF RECORDED AT THE DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (DIA). THAT IS ALSO THE SEASONAL TOTAL SO FAR WHICH IS 15.4 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. EVEN THE 1.5 INCHES IS 9.2 INCHES BELOW NOVEMBER’S NORMAL OF 10.7 INCHES. THERE WERE NO PRECIPITATION RECORDS SET OR TIED DURING NOVEMBER. IRONICALLY…NOVEMBER 2009 ALSO HAD A TOTAL PRECIPITATION OF 0.49 INCH.

NOVEMBER’S AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 38.3 DEGREES WHICH IS 0.8 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 37.5 DEGREES. TEMPERATURES RANGED FROM A HIGH OF 77 DEGREES ON THE 6TH DOWN TO A LOW READING OF 4 DEGREES ON THE 25TH. THERE WAS ONE MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE BELOW FREEZING…31 DEGREES ON THE 29TH AND 24 LOW TEMPERATURES AT OR BELOW FREEZING WHICH IS THE NORMAL AMOUNT FOR NOVEMBER. THERE WERE NO TEMPERATURE RECORDS SET OR TIED DURING NOVEMBER.

THE PEAK WIND DURING THE MONTH WAS 55 MPH FROM A NORTHWESTERLY DIRECTION (320 DEGREES). THIS ESTABLISHES A NEW RECORD HIGH WIND GUST RECORD FOR NOVEMBER. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 49 MPH SET IN 1990. THERE WERE NO THUNDERSTORMS RECORDED AT DIA. SIX DAYS RECORDED DENSE FOG WHICH IS VISIBILITY AT OR BELOW 1/4 MILE AND 7 DAYS RECORDED LIGHT FOG.

DECEMBER…DENVER’S FINAL MONTH OF THE YEAR WAS DRIER AND WARMER THAN NORMAL BUT NOT DRY OR WARM ENOUGH TO GET INTO THE TOP 10 WARMEST OR DRIEST. THE MONTH FINISHED WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 34.3 DEGREES WHICH WAS 4.0 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL 30.3 DEGREES. THE WARM AVERAGE WAS STILL 4.5 DEGREES COOLER THAN THE 10TH WARMEST DENVER DECEMBER. THE WARMEST DECEMBER WAS 43.8 DEGREES RECORDED IN 1933. MERCURY READINGS RANGED FROM A HIGH OF 70 DEGREES ON THE 14TH DOWN TO A LOW READING OF ZERO DEGREES ON THE 31ST. THERE WERE ONLY 2 RECORDS ESTABLISHED: ON THE 3RD…TIED RECORD HIGH OF 69 DEGREES WITH 1885 AND ON THE 14TH…A NEW RECORD HIGH OF 70 DEGREES SURPASSING THE OLD RECORD OF 69 DEGREES LAST SET IN 1924. 28 DAYS HAD LOW TEMPERATURES AT OR BELOW FREEZING WHICH IS ONE BELOW NORMAL. TWO DAYS HAD HIGHS AT OR BELOW 32 DEGREES WHICH IS 3 BELOW NORMAL.

PRECIPITATION WAS WELL BELOW NORMAL WITH ONLY 0.22 INCH FALLING INTO THE DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT’S RAIN COLLECTING GAGE.  THIS WAS 0.41 INCH BELOW THE NORM OF 0.63 INCH. NEARLY ALL OF THE MOISTURE WAS IN THE FORM OF SNOWFALL AND IT WAS COLLECTED ON THE LAST 2 DAYS OF THE MONTH. UP THROUGH THE 29TH OF THE MONTH…DECEMBER 2010 WAS TIED AS THE 2ND DRIEST DECEMBER SINCE 1872 TIED WITH 1905. THEN MOTHER NATURE DROPPED A LITTLE WINTER STORM ON DENVER ON THE 30TH AND 31ST…0.22 INCH OF LIQUID WAS THE WATER EQUIVALENT OF THE 3.3 INCHES OF SNOW THAT FELL ON THE SAME 2 DAYS. 2.2 INCHES ON THE 30TH AND 1.1 INCHES ON THE 31ST. 3.3 IS 5.4 INCHES BELOW THE DECEMBER NORMAL OF 8.7 INCHES. FOR THE 2010-2011 SEASON (JULY-DECEMBER) SO FAR…ONLY 4.8 INCHES OF SNOWFALL HAS BEEN MEASURED WHICH IS 20.8 INCHES BELOW THE SEASONAL NORMAL THROUGH DECEMBER OF 25.6 INCHES AND SO FAR FOR THE SEASON…4.8 INCHES RANKS AS THE SECOND LEAST SNOWIEST SINCE SNOW RECORDS BEGAN IN 1882..

THERE WERE NO THUNDERSTORMS RECORDED AT DIA DURING DECEMBER WHICH IS NORMAL. THERE WERE 2 DENSE FOG DAYS WHICH IS VISIBILITY AT OR BELOW 1/4 MILE WHICH IS ONE ABOVE NORMAL. FIVE DAYS HAD LIGHT FOG. THE PEAK WIND DURING THE MONTH WAS 40 MPH FROM A SOUTHERLY DIRECTION (180 DEGREES).
