March along the Colorado Front Range can be a very pleasant time as temperatures climb with the approach to and arrival of spring. However the month is also Denver’s snowiest and wintry weather is not unusual. This variety of conditions will be reflected in our March 2014 slideshow below.

I have always been a shutterbug ever since my parents gave me my first SLR one Christmas when I was in high school. It wasn’t until recent years however that I began to hone the craft and now I have launched Tony’s Takes Photography.
Certainly I have no illusion of becoming a professional photographer or having the skills of one. This is purely a hobby for me. However I think I do a pretty passable job and decided I would like to share my images. Up until now that has been confined to this website and on social media with friends and family.
Over at Tony’s Takes (www.tonystakes.com) I will be sharing the images I capture. These will usually be focused on the subjects which interest me most – extreme weather, landscapes and wildlife. Certainly some of these photos will make their way here as always but that will be the primary spot where I post them.
Don’t worry though. Weather is still a passion of mine andThorntonWeather.com will be staying around as always and remaining your one and only spot for truly local Thornton weather news and information!

We headed out this morning looking for bald eagles at Cherry Creek State Park. Certainly saw LOTS of them but also enjoyed a beautiful morning with the snow-covered trees and blue skies.

The month of February is one that begins a transition to warmer temperatures and oftentimes lacks snowfall. Nevertheless, Mother Nature oftentimes offers stunning scenes to be captured in imagery as we see in our February 2014 slideshow.

One of our friends was hanging out along the South Platte again this afternoon. Had to shoot pictures into the sun but with the iridescent clouds in the background it looks really cool.
Cloud iridescence is caused by clouds (usually cirrus) that have small water droplets or ice crystals in them causing the light to be diffracted, or spread out. The phenomena is much like the rainbow colors seen with oil in water.

If you happened to look to the east at about 7:45 a.m. this morning you were treated to something pretty cool – a sun dog.
A sun dog is also called a ‘mock sun’, ‘phantom sun’ or ‘parhelia.’ These appear as bright spots to either side of the sun at the same distance above the horizon. They are caused by sunlight refracting through hexagonal ice crystals, usually in cirrus clouds. As the light hits the crystals, it is bent 22 degrees before reaching your eyes, thus creating the phenomena.

While typically a cold month, January is oftentimes lacking in terms of weather drama. Living in Colorado however provides plenty of opportunity to capture a wide variety of weather-related imagery as we see in our January 2014 slideshow.

From stunning sunsets and impressive storms to cute snow-covered dogs and amazing wildlife, Coloradans witness amazing things every day. Starting today ThorntonWeather.com begins a new feature showcasing the imagery captured by cameras and we want YOUR pictures to share with others.
Colorado’s weather is anything but boring and virtually every day we are greeted with wonders large and small. Even in the quietest of weather conditions, the views of our landscape are stunningly varied from the vast plains to the east through the urban corridor of Denver and Thornton to the massive peaks towering over 14,000 feet high.
We all love our state and the wonders we see every day. ThorntonWeather.com wants to share what you see with others.
Our monthly photo slideshow is going to feature images that we have taken but more importantly images that you have captured. The photos can be of anything even remotely weather-related.
Landscapes, current conditions, wildlife, pets, kids. Whimsical, newsy, artsy. Taken at the zoo, some other area attraction, a local park, a national park or your backyard. You name it, we want to see and share it!
Images can be taken in Thornton, Denver or anywhere across the extraordinary Centennial State. We’ll even take some from out of state if we can tie it to Colorado somehow.
We’ll keep the criteria very open to interpretation with just about any image eligible to be shown in our slideshows.
What do you win for having your image in our slideshow? We are just a ‘mom and pop’ outfit and make no money from our site so we really don’t have the means to provide prizes. However you will have our undying gratitude and the satisfaction that your images are shared on the most popular website in Thornton.

Colorado’s weather and scenery can certainly be dramatic and the past year has been no different. Armed with our camera, we captured hundreds of images and shared them with our readers.
While we are entirely amateur photographers, sometimes Colorado makes it hard to take a bad picture. Over the course of 2013 we took hundreds of photos, many of which were shared with you on Facebook, Google+ and Twitter.
Picking which of the images we liked the best was not easy. The subject matter ranged from weather to wildlife to expansive landscapes and even heavenly bodies.
As we sorted through we couldn’t help but notice the lack of real weather drama in the photos we took. While there were wildfires to our south and floods to the north, Thornton managed to escape the year relatively unscathed from Mother Nature’s wrath.
We also were unable to do any real storm chasing so severe weather imagery was lacking. Hopefully that can be rectified in 2014. 😉
When all was said and done we came up with 25 images that we thought were our best photos of the year. You can view them in the slideshow below. Leave a comment here or on our social media pages and let us know what you think.

One of the benefits of being early risers like we are is that we oftentimes get to see what many others sleep through. Those that had their eyes closed just before the sunrise and as it came up, missed quite a show. Here are a few shots we took this morning.
