(ThorntonWeather.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The National Weather Service has begun a significant upgrade to Denver&#8217;s weather radar.\u00a0 The new dual-polarization (dual-pol) radar brings 14 new data types and will greatly enhance the ability of forecasters to monitor and analyze storms.<\/p>\n<p>During the upgrade while Denver&#8217;s radar is inoperative, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/radar.php\">ThorntonWeather.com&#8217;s radar page will be using the adjacent radar in Cheyenne<\/a>.\u00a0 This will somewhat limit the ability to monitor storms during the two week period while the work is taking place.<\/p>\n<p>The information below is from the National Weather Service and describes the dual-pol upgrade and what it brings to the table in terms of enhancements with monitoring severe weather.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On the net:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/weather\/news\/story\/2012-01-17\/national-weather-service-new-radar-system\/52746738\/1\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. weather radar network gets upgrade<\/a> (USA Today)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From the National Weather Service:<\/p>\n<table width=\"550\" border=\"0\" cellpadding=\"10\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\">During a two-week period, beginning August 30, 2012, the Doppler radar at your National Weather Service Forecast Office will undergo an upgrade to incorporate new technology.\u00a0<strong>For these two weeks, radar data will be unavailable from NWS Denver\/Boulder!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nws.noaa.gov\/com\/stratplan\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-bitly-type=\"bitly_hover_card\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crh.noaa.gov\/images\/dualpol\/WRN_Banner_small.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"66\" border=\"0\" \/><\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nThis much anticipated upgrade\u00a0is part of the NWS vision to build a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nws.noaa.gov\/com\/stratplan\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-bitly-type=\"bitly_hover_card\">Weather-Ready Nation<\/a>\u00a0to better protect lives and livelihoods. This exciting upgrade\u00a0will incorporate a new technology called dual-polarization, or\u00a0<strong>dual-pol<\/strong>. This new technology will result in 14 new radar products that will enable us to continue providing our suite of high quality products and services to the public. This new technology and data will primarily help forecasters identify the type of precipitation that is falling as well as improve rainfall estimates<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Why Upgrade to Dual-Pol?\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crh.noaa.gov\/images\/dualpol\/UpgradeDP_Banner.jpg\" alt=\"Why Upgrade to Dual-Pol?\" border=\"0\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\">Current NWS Doppler radars transmit and receive pulses of radio waves in a horizontal orientation. As a result, the radar only measures the horizontal dimensions of targets (e.g. cloud and precipitation droplets). Dual-polarimetric radar transmits and receives pulses in both a horizontal and vertical orientation. Therefore, the radar measures both the horizontal and vertical dimensions of targets. Since the radar receives energy from horizontal and vertical pulses, we can obtain better estimates of the size, shape, and variety of targets. It is expected that this will result in significant improvements in the estimation of precipitation rates, the ability to discriminate between precipitation types (e.g. hail vs. rain), and the identification of non-meteorological returns, such as chaff, ground clutter, and smoke plumes from wildfires that are not uncommonly detected by weather radar systems such as WSR-88D.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><center><strong>Current NWS Doppler Radar<\/strong><\/center><\/td>\n<td><center><strong>Dual-Pol Radar<\/strong><\/center><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crh.noaa.gov\/images\/dualpol\/NonPolarimetricRadar.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"148\" \/><\/center><\/td>\n<td><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crh.noaa.gov\/images\/dualpol\/PolarimetricRadar.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"148\" \/><\/center><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"The Benefits of Dual-Pol\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crh.noaa.gov\/images\/dualpol\/BenefitsBP_Banner.jpg\" alt=\"The Benefits of Dual-Pol\" border=\"0\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\">\n<ul>\n<li>Better estimation of total precipitation amounts<\/li>\n<li>Better estimation of the size distribution of hydrometeors (raindrops, snowflakes, hailstones, drizzle)<\/li>\n<li>Much improved ability to identify areas of extremely heavy rainfall that are closely linked with flash floods<\/li>\n<li>Improved detection and mitigation of non-weather related radar echoes (chaff, smoke plumes, ground clutter)<\/li>\n<li>Easier identification of the melting layer (helpful for identifying snow levels in higher terrain)<\/li>\n<li>Improved ability to classify precipitation type<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The full benefit of dual-pol radar, however, will not be fully realized until NWS forecasters and research meteorologists develop real-time expertise.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"What is Polarization?\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crh.noaa.gov\/images\/dualpol\/WhatisPol_Banner.jpg\" alt=\"What is Polarization?\" border=\"0\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\">A radio wave is a set of oscillating electric and magnetic fields, oriented 90 degrees to each other.
