id=\"caption-attachment-360\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Satellite image of Hurrican Gustav as of 2:00am Sunday.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Residents along the Gulf Coast, particularly in Louisiana, are being ordered to evacuate as Hurricane Gustav bears down on the state.\u00a0 With Hurricane Katrina still fresh on everyone&#8217;s mind, New Orleans is under a mandatory evacuation order and states all along the coast from Texas to Mississippi prepare for a possible hit from Gustav.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/\">National Hurricane Center<\/a> forecasters were surprised by how quickly Gustav strengthened in recent days.\u00a0 Within 24 hours the storm went from a tropical storm to a category 4 hurricane.\u00a0 Gustav is currently\u00a0a category\u00a03 storm with sustained winds of 125 mph (gusting to 145 mph) and is expected to intensify in the next 12 hours, possibly reaching category 5 status for a time.\u00a0 As of 3:00am MT Sunday\u00a0the storm was 425 miles southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River and heading northwest at 16 mph.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By the time it makes landfall, forecasters expect it to be a category 3 storm, possibly a category 4.\u00a0 The current forecast path for Gustav has it striking the central Louisiana coast with devastating results.\u00a0 Storm surges of 18 to 25 feet on the eastern side of the hurricane are possible and 6 to 12 inches of rain may fall in Louisiana, southern Mississippi and southern Arkansas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_361\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-361\" style=\"width: 226px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gopconvention2008.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/0808\/13013.html\">Republican National\u00a0Committee was waiting to determine whether or not\u00a0to proceed with\u00a0its convention<\/a> set to begin Monday it St.\u00a0Paul, MN.\u00a0 If it proceeds, it is unlikely President Bush\u00a0would address\u00a0\u00a0the delegates in person Monday as scheduled and would\u00a0probably do\u00a0so instead by video link.\u00a0 John McCain in an interview with Chris Wallace of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/\">Fox News<\/a> said, &#8220;It just wouldn&#8217;t be appropriate to have a festive occasion while a near-tragedy or a terrible challenge is presented in the form of a natural disaster.\u00a0 So we&#8217;re monitoring it from day to day, and I&#8217;m saying a few prayers,
