{"id":3259,"date":"2011-01-04T16:16:25","date_gmt":"2011-01-04T23:16:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/?p=3259"},"modified":"2011-01-07T16:26:54","modified_gmt":"2011-01-07T23:26:54","slug":"thorntons-december-2010-weather-wrap-month-ends-drier-and-warmer-than-normal-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/thornton-weather\/thorntons-december-2010-weather-wrap-month-ends-drier-and-warmer-than-normal-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Thornton&#8217;s December 2010 weather wrap &#8211; Month ends drier and warmer than normal again"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Thornton's December 2010 Weather Wrap\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/images\/months\/december-big.gif\" alt=\"Thornton's December 2010 Weather Wrap\" width=\"310\" height=\"167\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thornton wraps up December with another drier and warmer than normal month.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Much to our dismay we closed out December the same way we did the month prior &#8211; warmer and drier than average.\u00a0 Snowfall continues to elude us this season as we have recorded a mere 4.8 inches thus far which is 20.8 inches below normal.<\/p>\n<p>For the month of December the story was the precipitation, or rather the lack thereof.\u00a0 A mere 0.22 inch was officially recorded at Denver International Airport and Thornton was only slightly better at 0.28 inch.\u00a0 This is far below the normal of 0.63 inch for Denver.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The majority of that precipitation was during the last two days of the month when a very cold and quick snowstorm moved through Colorado.\u00a0 Were it not for that Denver would have wrapped up the month as the 2nd driest December on record.\u00a0 Instead the little bit of precipitation that was recorded dropped it out of &#8216;top 10 driest&#8217; consideration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The snow that did fall on the 30th and 31st did not amount to a lot &#8211; officially 3.3 inches at DIA.\u00a0 Thornton was only slightly better with 3.8 inches.\u00a0 This is again far below the historical average of 8.7 inches for December.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The 2010 &#8211; 2011 snow season thus far has been dismal.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.examiner.com\/weather-in-denver\/where-is-the-snow-denver-sees-least-amount-of-snow-122-years\">Only one other snow season was worse up to this point and that was during the 1888 to 1889 season 122 years ago<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Temperature wise Denver recorded an average temperature of 34.3 degrees.\u00a0 This was 4.0 degrees above the normal of 30.3 degrees.\u00a0 Thornton was only slightly cooler with an average temperature of 33.9 degrees for the month.\u00a0 Despite the relatively warm temperatures the month did not qualify for &#8216;top 10 warmest&#8217; status.<\/p>\n<p>Denver&#8217;s official temperatures ranged from a high of 70 degrees on the 14th down to a low of zero degrees on the 31st.\u00a0 Here in Thornton our maximum of 70.2 degrees was virtually identical and our lowest temperature was 2.2 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>Two weather records were set.\u00a0 On the 3rd of the month we tied the record high for the date of 69 degrees last set in 1885.\u00a0 The 70 degrees recorded on the 14th broke the old record high for that date of 69 degrees that was set in 1924.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Below is a complete look at the official Denver weather statistics for December 2010.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/climatedataout122010.html\">Click here to view the monthly climate summary for Thornton<\/a>.<\/p>\n<pre>...THE DENVER CO CLIMATE SUMMARY FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER 2010...\r\n\r\nCLIMATE NORMAL PERIOD 1971 TO 2000\r\nCLIMATE RECORD PERIOD 1872 TO 2010\r\n\r\nWEATHER         OBSERVED          NORMAL  DEPART  LAST YEAR'S\r\n                 VALUE   DATE(S)  VALUE   FROM    VALUE  DATE(S)\r\n                                          NORMAL\r\n................................................................\r\nTEMPERATURE (F)\r\nRECORD\r\n HIGH              79   12\/05\/1939\r\n LOW              -25   12\/22\/1990\r\n                        12\/24\/1876\r\nHIGHEST            70   12\/14        79      -9       59  12\/21\r\n                                                          12\/01\r\nLOWEST              0   12\/31       -25      25      -17  12\/09\r\nAVG.
