{"id":290,"date":"2008-08-11T06:22:37","date_gmt":"2008-08-11T12:22:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/?p=290"},"modified":"2008-08-08T11:26:21","modified_gmt":"2008-08-08T17:26:21","slug":"forecasters-increase-hurricane-chances","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/severe-weather\/forecasters-increase-hurricane-chances\/","title":{"rendered":"Forecasters increase hurricane chances"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_291\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-291\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/None\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-291\" title=\"NOAA says there is a greater chance for hurricanes in the coming months.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/hurricane.jpg\" alt=\"NOAA says there is a greater chance for hurricanes in the coming months.\" width=\"250\" height=\"147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/hurricane.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/hurricane-150x88.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-291\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NOAA says there is a greater chance for hurricanes in the coming months.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In their August update to hurricane season forecasts, experts at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)<\/a> have changed their predictions for the season and now expect a greater chance of hurricanes this season.\u00a0 They are now predicting an &#8220;above normal&#8221; season with 14 to 18 named storms &#8211; up from the 12 to 16 they predicted in May.<\/p>\n<p>The forecasters now believe there is an 85 percent chance that this above normal trend will take place (up from 65 percent in May).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeading indicators for an above-normal season during 2008 include the continuing multi-decadal signal \u2013 atmospheric and oceanic conditions that have spawned increased hurricane activity since 1995 \u2013 and the lingering effects of La Ni\u00f1a,\u201d said Gerry Bell, Ph.D. of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/\">NOAA\u2019s Climate Prediction Center<\/a>. \u201cSome of these conditions include reduced wind shear, weaker trade winds, an active West African monsoon system, the winds coming off of Africa and warmer-than-average water in the Atlantic Ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_292\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-292\" style=\"width: 275px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/None\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-292\" title=\"The updated 2008 hurricane outlook.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/2008-08-hurricaneoutlook.jpg\" alt=\"The updated 2008 hurricane outlook.\" width=\"275\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/2008-08-hurricaneoutlook.jpg 275w, https:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/2008-08-hurricaneoutlook-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-292\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The updated 2008 hurricane outlook.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Thus far in 2008 there have been five named storms and the most active hurricane period &#8211; August to October &#8211; is just now beginning.\u00a0 Will this prediction hold true?\u00a0 Unfortunateley forecasters have struggled in recent years with their predictions.\u00a0 Last year NOAA predicted 10 hurricanes and only six formed.
