{"id":155,"date":"2008-05-13T08:09:19","date_gmt":"2008-05-13T14:09:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/?p=155"},"modified":"2008-05-13T08:09:19","modified_gmt":"2008-05-13T14:09:19","slug":"top-internet-weather-resources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/colorado-weather\/top-internet-weather-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"Top Internet Weather Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Internet has an incredible amount of information out there.\u00a0 Weather  websites abound, some better than others.\u00a0 Everyone of course knows about the  local TV station websites that provide a quick, glossed over look at the weather  but what if you want to know more?\u00a0 These five sites are great places for more  in depth information.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.weatherunderground.com\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-156\" style=\"float: right; border: 0; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" title=\"Weather Underground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/wu.jpg\" alt=\"Weather Underground\" width=\"100\" height=\"64\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wunderground.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Weather Underground<\/a> \u2013 Like many weather sites, the Weather  Underground is a one stop shop for everything weather.\u00a0 All of the standard  stuff like conditions and forecasts from around the U.S. and the globe are  here.\u00a0 A few things set it apart from others though.\u00a0 First are the weather maps  that you see when you visit their main page \u2013 temperature, dew point, wind,  satellite, fronts and more are all easily accessible.\u00a0 The second and most  unique feature is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wunderground.com\/weatherstation\/index.asp\" target=\"_blank\">network of Personal Weather Stations (PWS) that provide data to  the Weather Underground<\/a>.\u00a0 Clicking on the \u201cPersonal Weather Stations\u201d link  toward the top right of their site allows you to select a state and then view  data from one of thousands of weather stations operated by weather enthusiasts.\u00a0  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wunderground.com\/weatherstation\/ListStations.asp?selectedState=CO&amp;selectedCountry=United+States\" target=\"_blank\">Look at the Colorado list<\/a> and you will almost certainly be  able to find a station within a couple of miles of your home.\u00a0 You can then view  real time conditions for that station thus providing you with a more accurate  view of the conditions where you live \u2013 not 20 miles away at Denver  International Airport or downtown.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.weather.gov\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright alignnone size-full wp-image-157\" style=\"float: right; border: 0; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" title=\"National Weather Service\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/nws.gif\" alt=\"National Weather Service\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nws.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Weather Service (NWS)<\/a> \u2013 Unbeknownst to most folks is that  the United States\u2019 government run weather service is quite unique in the world.\u00a0  No country has a government department with the resources of our own National  Weather Service.\u00a0 On weather.gov you will find a dizzying array of information  from weather conditions and radar to climatological and severe weather  information.\u00a0 In terms of sheer amount of information available, it is second to  none.\u00a0 Where it does suffer however is in usability \u2013 it just isn\u2019t always that  easy to find what you are looking for.\u00a0 It is there though and well worth  spending some time investigating.\u00a0 Also be sure to check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crh.noaa.gov\/bou\/\" target=\"_blank\">our local Denver \/ Boulder  Weather Forecast Office<\/a> for information specific to Colorado.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.weather.com\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-158\" style=\"float: right; border: 0; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" title=\"The Weather Channel\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/twc.gif\" alt=\"The Weather Channel\" width=\"100\" height=\"89\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.weather.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Weather Channel<\/a> \u2013 By far the most \u201ccommercial\u201d of weather websites,  this is the online arm of the TV station of the same name.\u00a0 Surprisingly the  depth of information isn\u2019t as great as one might expect considering its name and  reputation but it is still a good site to remember.\u00a0 I would consider this a  good \u201cconsumer\u201d weather website for someone just wanting the no frills basics  without all the details.\u00a0 One neat new feature is the weather maps that the  Weather Channel now provides via Google Maps.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/mpl?moduleurl=http:%2F%2Fwww.weather.com%2Fgoogle%2FwxGMappletv1.xml&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;ll=41.32,-88.2&amp;spn=31.504011,65.214844&amp;t=p&amp;z=4\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to view them<\/a>.\u00a0 Using this map you can zoom in on an  area of the country and view current conditions.\u00a0 The neatest thing though is  the overlays that you can add to the map including cloud cover and radar.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.noaa.gov\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-159\" style=\"float: right; border: 0; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" title=\"NOAA\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/noaa.jpg\" alt=\"NOAA\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Oceanic &amp; Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)<\/a> \u2013 This  government agency is a one stop shop for all things related to the climate.\u00a0  Like their website says, \u201cOur reach goes from the surface of the sun to the  depths of the ocean floor as we work to keep citizens informed of the changing  environment around them.\u201d\u00a0 NOAA operates everything from satellites that monitor  the sun and the Earth from space to more terrestrial monitoring of our climate  and environment.\u00a0 Long term forecasting and data analysis provide the public,  government and researchers with information vital to understanding the world in  which we live.\u00a0 Like many government sites, there is a ton of information here  but you do have to hunt for it a bit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"..\/..\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"float: right; border: 0; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/wxgraphic\/wxgraphic.php\" alt=\"ThorntonWeather.com\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>ThorntonWeather.com<\/a> \u2013 Of course I have to plug my own  website!\u00a0 There are hundreds of personal weather stations across the state and  many provide their data free to the Internet public.\u00a0 With data from my own  weather station coupled with the many freely available resources on the  Internet, my website is a bit of a one stop weather information center,  particularly for those living in the north metro area.\u00a0 Everything you need in a  weather website is there \u2013 <a href=\"..\/..\/\" target=\"_blank\">current conditions<\/a>, <a href=\"..\/..\/wx2.php\" target=\"_blank\">forecasts<\/a>, <a href=\"..\/..\/wx30.php\" target=\"_blank\">radar<\/a>, <a href=\"..\/..\/wx3.php\" target=\"_blank\">maps<\/a>, <a href=\"..\/..\/blog\" target=\"_blank\">weather news<\/a>, <a href=\"..\/..\/wx20.php\" target=\"_blank\">climatological  information<\/a>, <a href=\"..\/..\/wx25.php\" target=\"_blank\">historical data<\/a>, <a href=\"..\/?cat=14\" target=\"_blank\">education<\/a> and even <a href=\"..\/..\/wx27.php\" target=\"_blank\">lightning detection<\/a>.\u00a0 Be sure to check it out \u2013 you will  probably be surprised just how much is readily available to a weather  enthusiast!\u00a0 Two other metro area personal weather station websites that are run  by fellow weather geeks that I help maintain are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arvadawx.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">ArvadaWx.com<\/a> for those on the  west side of town and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reunionweather.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">ReunionWeather.com<\/a> for those to the northeast.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Internet has an incredible amount of information out there.\u00a0 Weather websites abound, some better than others.\u00a0 Everyone of course knows about the local TV station websites that provide a quick, glossed over look at the weather but what if you want to know more?\u00a0 These five sites are great places for more in depth &hellip;
