{"id":12396,"date":"2014-01-04T22:57:29","date_gmt":"2014-01-05T05:57:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/?p=12396"},"modified":"2014-01-05T05:54:01","modified_gmt":"2014-01-05T12:54:01","slug":"2013-thornton-weather-recap-numbers-show-a-cooler-and-wetter-than-normal-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/thornton-weather\/2013-thornton-weather-recap-numbers-show-a-cooler-and-wetter-than-normal-year\/","title":{"rendered":"2013 Thornton weather recap: Numbers show a cooler and wetter than normal year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"Thornton, Colorado 2013 Weather Recap.\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-6lEWJWE5HXQ\/UsRWTrSwVVI\/AAAAAAAABRk\/GxRCOWZjLBA\/s300\/Thornton2013WeatherReview.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" \/>Another year is in the books and as we look back at 2013\u2019s weather, we see Thornton \u2013 and indeed much of the state \u2013 saw cooler and wetter than normal conditions.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of temperatures, Thornton saw an average overall annual temperature of 49.3 degrees.\u00a0 Out at Denver International Airport where the Mile High City\u2019s official records are kept, the average was warmer at 50.1 degrees.\u00a0 By comparison, Denver\u2019s 1981 to 2010 annual average temperature is 50.4 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>Thornton recorded 47 days with temperatures at or above the 90 degree mark.\u00a0 At DIA 54 such days were recorded.\u00a0 Both were above the average of 40 90 degree days per year.<\/p>\n<p>The hottest temperature recorded during the year in Thornton came on June 11th when the mercury climbed to 99.2 degrees.\u00a0 Denver\u2019s hottest temperature of 100 degrees came on June 11th and July 11th.<\/p>\n<p>At the opposite end of the thermometer, Thornton saw 175 days with low temperatures below freezing.\u00a0 Denver was very similar with 169 days with temperatures below 32 degrees.\u00a0 On average we expect to see 157 days below freezing.<\/p>\n<p>Our coldest temperature in Thornton came last month on December 5th when the mercury dropped to -9.3 degrees.\u00a0 Denver\u2019s occurred on the same date as the mercury at the airport dropped to -15 degrees.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Must see photos &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/colorado-weather\/top-shots-2013-thorntonweather-coms-top-photos-of-the-year\/\">Top Shots 2013: ThorntonWeather.com\u2019s top photos of the year<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Precipitation for 2013 came in well above normal thanks largely in part to the extraordinary amount of rain received in September.<\/p>\n<p>In all, Thornton saw 21.67 inches of liquid precipitation in our bucket.\u00a0 Denver, as always drier due to the station being at DIA, saw 17.60 inches.\u00a0 Both were above the annual average of 14.92 inches.<\/p>\n<p>Above and by far the wettest month of the year was September and was responsible for the above average precipitation numbers.\u00a0 Thornton saw 10.15 inches in the rain bucket that month alone, Denver 5.61 inches.<\/p>\n<p>Snowfall during the calendar year ended up relatively strong thanks to healthy totals from February through April.\u00a0 Overall the rest of the months of the year saw below normal snowfall.<\/p>\n<p>Thornton\u2019s annual snow total came in at an even 70.0 inches.\u00a0 Denver bested us with 74.1 inches during 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Denver\u2019s 2013 \/ 2014 season however has started out dismally with only 8.1 inches so far in the Mile High City.\u00a0 Thornton ended December a bit better with 10.8 inches.\u00a0 Both are well below the long term average that would have us see 21.2 inches by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/climatedatayearout2013.html\">Click here to view Thornton&#8217;s 2013 climate summary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  \" alt=\"Thornton, Colorado temperature summary chart for 2013.\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-0Uvtxc0vcmA\/UsRUwM4K5cI\/AAAAAAAABRE\/dqAxnznLbaI\/s580\/2013-temps.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"360\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thornton, Colorado temperature summary chart for 2013.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  \" alt=\"Thornton, Colorado precipitation summary for 2013.\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-RkQzTS1XZK4\/UsRUwFPZf5I\/AAAAAAAABRI\/jxpWCako3N0\/s580\/2013-precip.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"338\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thornton, Colorado precipitation summary for 2013.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 536px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Denver, Colorado temperature and precipitation summary.
