{"id":10945,"date":"2013-05-01T17:39:41","date_gmt":"2013-05-01T23:39:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/?p=10945"},"modified":"2013-05-01T18:44:46","modified_gmt":"2013-05-02T00:44:46","slug":"april-2013-april-weather-recap-another-cold-snowy-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/thornton-weather\/april-2013-april-weather-recap-another-cold-snowy-month\/","title":{"rendered":"April 2013 weather recap: Another cold, snowy month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When we look back at April 2013 it will be remembered for two key things: the cold and the snow.\u00a0 By both measurements the month saw extremes with temperatures well below normal and well above normal snowfall, the third month in a row we experienced those conditions.<\/p>\n<p>A series of storm systems moved through during April providing regular doses of cold and snow.\u00a0 Three systems from the 9th of the month through the 25th, each coming at the start of the workweeks, provided the notable conditions.\u00a0 Seventeen of those 18 days saw below normal temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>Denver\u2019s official average temperature for the month came in at 41.7 degrees.\u00a0 This was an impressive 5.7 degrees below the 1981 \u2013 2000 historical average.\u00a0 This put April 2013 into the books as the fifth coldest April since recordkeeping began in Denver.\u00a0 Thornton was only slightly better with an April average temperature of 42.3 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>On four days Denver failed to see high temperatures climb above freezing, Thornton registered three such days.<\/p>\n<p>Five cold temperature records were setting during the month.\u00a0 Record lows were set on April 9th, April 10th and April 22nd.\u00a0 The record low was tied on April 16th.\u00a0 A record low maximum was recorded on the 9th as well.<\/p>\n<p>Temperatures ranged from a high of 80 degrees on the 29th down to a low of 6 degrees on the 10th in Denver.\u00a0 Thornton\u2019s temperatures were similar with a high of 81.7 degrees on the 29th and a low temperature for the month of 6.7 degrees on the 10th.<\/p>\n<p>The precipitation was the second half of the April 2013 story with plenty of that falling, primarily in the form of snow.<\/p>\n<p>Denver officially recorded 1.87 inches of liquid precipitation, just a bit above the April average of 1.71 inches.\u00a0 Thornton was just a touch drier with 1.77 inches of precipitation.<\/p>\n<p>Snow was in abundance as Denver saw 20.4 inches of snowfall as measured at Denver International Airport.\u00a0 Thornton was trailing with 19.1 inches.\u00a0 Both marks were well above the Denver April normal of 6.8 inches.\u00a0 Denver\u2019s measurement fell just short of making the list of 10 snowiest Aprils with April 2013 ranking as the 11th snowiest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/climatedataout42013.html\">Click here to view the ThorntonWeather.com April 2013 Climate Summary<\/a><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Thornton, Colorado April 2013 Temperatures.\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-aCviu9IorEY\/UYGjmgEcSPI\/AAAAAAAAATM\/mZxAVfL6scI\/s580\/april-temps.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"359\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thornton, Colorado April 2013 Temperatures.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Thornton, Colorado April 2013 precipitation.\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-yWxqr3ffGAI\/UYGjmm_KG8I\/AAAAAAAAATQ\/ro9ZDW2javo\/s580\/april-precip.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"340\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thornton, Colorado April 2013 precipitation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From the National Weather Service:<\/p>\n<pre>...THE DENVER CO CLIMATE SUMMARY FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL 2013...\r\n\r\nCLIMATE NORMAL PERIOD 1981 TO 2010\r\nCLIMATE RECORD PERIOD 1872 TO 2013\r\n\r\nWEATHER         OBSERVED          NORMAL  DEPART  LAST YEAR`S\r\n                 VALUE   DATE(S)  VALUE   FROM    VALUE  DATE(S)\r\n                                          NORMAL\r\n................................................................\r\nTEMPERATURE (F)\r\nRECORD\r\n HIGH              90   04\/30\/1992\r\n LOW               -2   04\/02\/1975\r\nHIGHEST            80   04\/29        83      -3       88  04\/24\r\nLOWEST              6   04\/10        -2       8       24  04\/07\r\nAVG.
