Image courtesy Darin McGregor, The Rocky.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The cold continues to hang on and in the process Denver managed to set one record and tie another in the last 24 hours.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/thornton-weather\/dangerously-cold-temperatures-set-records-in-denver\/\" target=\"_self\">This is of course on top of the two records set before that.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday the mercury at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flydenver.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Denver International Airport<\/a> only climbed to 2 degrees.\u00a0 This smashes the old record low maximum temperature for the date of 19 degrees set way back in 1914.\u00a0 Following up on that, this morning DIA fell to an official low of 8 degrees below zero.\u00a0 This ties the record low temperature for December 16th last set in 1897.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Today we have good news and bad news.\u00a0 The good news is that the snow we were expecting didn\u2019t materialize on the Front Range thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucar.edu\/educ_outreach\/vtour\/wind.html\" target=\"_blank\">downslope winds<\/a>.\u00a0 That at least saves adding to the misery of the cold.\u00a0 The bad news though is that this cold is far from over.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nTuesday we will remain quite cold and only reach 18 degrees here in Denver.\u00a0 The mountains will continue to get pounded by snow, particularly the southwestern areas where two to three feet could fall.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weather.gov\/alerts\/co.html\" target=\"_blank\">A number of advisories have been posted for the southwestern and central mountains<\/a> so if you are heading to the hills, you may want check the conditions before you go.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday, Thursday and Friday there is a chance we could see temperatures above freezing but it won\u2019t be by much \u2013 maybe 33 or 34 degrees.\u00a0 A chance of snow will remain in the forecast for the foreseeable future as well although there won\u2019t be much if it does snow.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Come the weekend though, the \u201cheat wave\u201d looks to come to an end as an upper level trough that is sitting over the Pacific coast right now moves into the area.\u00a0 With it our chances of snow increase and the temperatures could drop to the low 20\u2019s Saturday, Sunday and Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The best piece of advice?\u00a0 Bundle up and stay inside if you can!\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Where&#8217;s this weather coming from?\u00a0\u00a0The jet stream is currently pulling in moist air from the Pacific and sending it right over Colorado.\u00a0 This in turn is pulling down cold air from the north.\u00a0 The image below helps you see what is going on.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1007\" title=\"The jet stream is currently speeding over southern Colorado.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/jetstream.jpg\" alt=\"The jet stream is currently speeding over southern Colorado.\" width=\"425\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/jetstream.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/jetstream-150x91.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thorntonweather.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/jetstream-300x182.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The cold continues to hang on and in the process Denver managed to set one record and tie another in the last 24 hours.\u00a0 This is of course on top of the two records set before that.
