Series of storms to bring cold and snow to Thornton
Thursday, December 3rd, 2009 5:50pm MST
Cold! That is the single word best used to describe the weather we had today and what is on the way tonight.Â
Overnight Wednesday night Thornton recorded a low temperature of 2.8 degrees and today we only reached a high of 16.7. Both of those are of course well below the normal lows and highs we expect to see this time of year.
For tonight, the cold returns and it may even be colder than last night. Look for overnight lows Thursday night to dip to right near the zero degree mark.Â
Some relief is on the way Friday and Saturday as high temperatures will finally climb above freezing and we should see some more sun. But, overnight Saturday through Sunday and into Monday we get cold again and introduce a chance for snow in the forecast.Â
Be safe and stay warm!

Previous update, 12/2/09, 5:30pm - Enter the Arctic! With one round of snow down, bitter cold arrives in Thornton starting tonight.Â
Today ThorntonWeather.com recorded 1.8 inches of snow while some areas of the city to the west and south got a bit more – up to 3 inches or so. Temperatures today never did warm up very much as we recorded a high temperatures of only 22.5 degrees – and that was at midnight! During the daytime hours we just barely broke the 20 degree mark.Â
With the sun having gone down, the thermometer is starting to plunge and we will see low temperatures tonight into the single digits around 4 degrees. Thursday won’t bring a lot of relief as we will only reach high temps into the teens. There is a slight chance of snow showers for the next 24 hours although if they happen, accumulations will be light – it is simply too cold and too dry.
Friday the sun returns and we may actually touch the freezing mark – if we are lucky. Saturday we should see highs in the upper 30’s before more cold and more snow arrive on Sunday.Â
Original story, 12/1/09, 4:08pm –  The winds are picking up, the clouds are increasing and the signs are there of a change in the weather. We hope you enjoyed today because Thornton won’t be seeing those kinds of temperatures for the foreseeable future as a string of systems will impact us for the next week or so.
First up is the storm that is now beginning to make itself felt in the area. Temperatures are starting to drop and will continue to do so throughout the night and approach the mid-teens. Look for snow to start falling by 7:00pm.Â
Overnight, Thornton can expect one to three inches of accumulation. There isn’t a lot of moisture with this system so it should be light, fluffy stuff. Tomorrow, the snow will continue in the morning hours, mainly before noon with an additional inch of snow possible. At least a slight chance of snow will remain in the forecast through Thursday.Â
The big news with the weather we are going to be getting is the temperatures – it will be COLD! Wednesday high temperatures will only reach the mid-20’s and on Thursday the low 20’s. Low temperatures Wednesday night and Thursday night will be in the single digits.
Friday we get a brief respite and some sun returning but temperatures will be struggling to even reach the freezing mark. Saturday and into Sunday a second system arrives and snow returns into the forecast and temperatures remain cold and in the 30’s. It is pretty early to try to put a number on snow accumulations for that system but right now it is looking to be similar to what we will get tonight and tomorrow, maybe a bit more.
Monday and Tuesday the snow moves out before a third system should arrive next Wednesday. Forecasting a couple days ahead is hard enough so a week ahead is very difficult. However, that storm could bring significant snowfall to the area.
