Changes on the horizon as cold approaches the Front Range
Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008 8:41pm MST
After a day of near 70 degrees, temperatures will plummet on Wednesday.
Denver reached a high temperature of 69 degrees under beautiful, clear Colorado blue skies today but change is on the horizon – literally. If you were to look to the west right before sunset you would be seeing clouds building over the Rocky Mountains to the west of Denver and that is a telltale sign of things to come.Â
The approaching cold front will reach the Front Range around 11:00pm tonight and precipitation will follow within a few hours of that. Right now it isn’t looking like this will be a big snow maker but it will hang with us for the next couple of days.Â
Overnight Tuesday snow will be likely before 8:00am Wednesday but accumulations will be light – less than one inch. Wednesday we will see a 35 degree drop in high temperatures from today as we will reach a high of only 34 degrees and snow flurries will continue throughout the day but again, accumulations will be light. As this front is coming from the north, areas north of I-70 stand a greater chance of measurable precipitation. The Colorado – Wyoming border looks like it could see the worst of it.Â
Thursday things will begin to move south and the precipitation will spread in that direction. The weak upslope we are currently seeing on the models though again shows light accumulations. We will know more in the next 24 hours how everything is going to shape up. The upslope right now is lookign pretty weak so that will limit the snow.Â
Thursday night things should begin to taper off and Friday and into the weekend we should warm up.
