Monday brings hot temps, thunderstorms; Monsoon season arrives tomorrow

Monday, July 7th, 2014 5:16am MST

Yesterday brought the hottest day of the year so far to Thornton and today we stand a chance to see that reading pushed side with an even warmer reading.  Late today we may see some thunderstorms and that will signify a change in the weather pattern and the arrival of monsoon season (and cooler temperatures).

For today, following a mild start, look for the mercury to climb quickly.  We’ll be hitting 90 degrees by about 10:00am and on our way to a high temperature around 99 degrees.

A cold front will move in late this afternoon and its timing could impact high temperatures.  An earlier that anticipated arrival would hold them down; if it sticks to the forecast, we will record our hottest readings of the year so far.

What we will see is a slight chance for thunderstorms starting at about 4:00pm with better chances as we get closer to sunset.  Some of these storms will have the potential to bring strong winds, a quick, heavy shot of rain and possibly hail.

A notable increase in moisture from the desert southwest indicates that our monsoon season is arriving.  This will bring stormy conditions we typically expect to see from that pattern and cooler temperatures for the rest of the week.
