First snowstorm of 2017 to wind down, cold to linger

Thursday, January 5th, 2017 5:26am MST

Our first winter storm of the year delivered a healthy dose of snow since late yesterday and will continue to bring a bit more this morning. It will then taper off and we will even see a bit of sun this afternoon but the bitter cold will remain.

We wake up this morning to six inches or so of snow in most spots of Thornton. Roads are a bit slick and snow-packed but not in horrible shape. Nevertheless, your morning commute will be rough so allow plenty of time and take it slow.

Look for the snow to continue through about mid-morning before tapering off. Another couple inches will be possible and the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11:00am. After seeing the mercury drop to around zero degrees this morning, we won’t see much improvement in temperatures today. Look for a high of only around 10 degrees.

Overnight lows tonight will be sinking to about 8 degrees below zero. We will start drying out and warming up tomorrow but it will be a bit of a slow process.
